OUR MISSION
Bringing the UW to the present day
The Sustainability Credit Coalition (SCC) at the University of Washington advocates for and works towards the implementation of an undergraduate sustainability credit requirement at our university. We strive to embrace the culture and values of UW in addressing global issues and committing to sustainability. Through the implementation of a sustainability graduation requirement, the SCC encourages and creates opportunities for departments and programs to implement, improve, or expand offered courses centered on sustainability. We hope to promote environmental and social equity by ensuring that every UW student gains knowledge of these concepts as a core part of their UW education. We work alongside UW stakeholders, including but not limited to staff, students, and faculty, to ensure that a sustainability credit requirement would benefit all people affected by it.
WHAT IS SUSTAINABILITY?
Definitions of the word "sustainability" can vary. To us, sustainability means being conscious and intentional for the sake of future generations; this means not only taking an environmental approach, but also focusing on social equity and sustainable economics.
Sustainability is interdisciplinary by nature; we cannot build something solid and powerful by supporting only one piece of the puzzle.
A sustainability graduation requirement, therefore, is not only concerned with environmental protection. It is critical that we consider sustainability in terms of all factors which influence the vitality of mankind and the world around us.
